What to do if involved in an Accident with an Uninsured Driver

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

With as many accidents that happen in the United States by insured drivers, there are many uninsured drivers on the road that cause accidents as well. That is why it is important to always watch out for other drivers on the road. But, what do you do if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver? There is no need to stress about it. Your own car insurance protects you to some degree, but you are going to have to remain calm to get the following things:

1. Get their information- You are going to have to get their name, address and phone number. Make sure that you verify this with a driver’s license. Don’t be afraid to ask for their information. It is your right. Make sure that you write down their license plate number and make and model of the car. With this information you can take it to your car insurance company to verify that you were in an accident with a real person in the event they give you a false identity.

2. Take Photos- Everyone in the world has a camera these days! Whether this is on your phone, or a 35mm, you have one in your car. Be sure to take photos of the accident. This will help your case if further information is going to be needed. This way if the accident is not that serious, you can document the fact. That way the other driver cannot damage their car further to make you pay more for something you did not do.

3. Accident Report Number- If the police are involved, in almost all cases they are, you are going to have to get an accident report number from them. Your car insurance company is going to want this information from you. Be sure that all the information that you have matches the information on the report once you see it. This will help you out a lot if you can remember to do it.

Being in an accident with an uninsured driver is no fun at all, but you need to be able to remember the above steps if you are going to get any justice at all. You have to be able to remain calm and not overreact. Try to never get angry. Accidents are something that is going to happen to every driver. You just need to be prepared. When the accident happens, be sure that you contact your car insurance as soon as possible to alert them of a claim that is coming. They can help you with all the information that you need to remember.
