New York State Car Insurance Legal Requirements

New York State is one of the states that have a very strict car insurance requirements and laws. The main and most important law is that no out – of – state insurance policy could be accepted, if you are residing in New York then you must have a valid insurance from insurance company working in the NY area. If you are moving out of the NY state then you need to surrender your NY plates and get new plates from your other state of residency.

There are minimum requirement for the financial reliability or the car insurance policy you are having, $ 10,000 minimum property damage, $ 25,000 to $ 50,000 for one person injury or death and finally $ 50,000 to 100,000 for more than one person injury or death.

You must submit one of the insurance cards to the New York DMV office and keep the other card in your vehicle all the time. Meanwhile, your insurance company should send an electronic notice to the DMV to verify that you are covered with them.

Failure to show the proof of financial liability when required can subject you to heavy fines.

Required age to get learner’s permit: minimum permitted age to issue a driving license is 16 years in the state of New York.

Non compliance penalties:

If you possess your driving plates while you do not have insurance coverage then your driver license and vehicle registration will be suspended indefinitely.

In some cases when there is a gap between the end of one insurance policy and the effective date of another one and that period is not over 90 days then you can pay a civil fee and not surrender your vehicle plates. The fine increases with the increment of the gap period.

Also if you fail to surrender the plates before the end date of your policy then your driving license will be suspended for the same number of days.

SR – 22

New York State is one of the states that do not require the SR – 22 form because when you first register your car in NY, you will be required to submit an original insurance card to the DMV as well as the electronic notice filed by your insurance company to the DMV verifying your insurance.

Also if you terminated your insurance with the company for any reason, the company will report to the DMV with your cancelation

Point And Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP)

New York State encourages drivers to take a refreshing driving course just to update their driving knowledge and that will help the drivers to avoid more accidents. Taking such test will give you up to four violation points from your driving record , the point reduction is only effective on the points took place in the 18 months previous to the course and cannot be used with future tickets or faults.
