New Mexico State Car Insurance Legal Requirements

If you are residing in New Mexico then you need to make sure that you carry an auto insurance policy that covers the minimum coverage required by the state law. Keep the proof of insurance coverage with you while you are in your car. It is mandatory to show such documents in the following situations:

  • If any police or law enforcement personnel required these documents
  • If you are involved in an accident
  • When you are in the process of renewing you vehicle registration at any DMV office

The minimum insurance coverage for property damage in New Mexico is $ 10,000

Required age to get learner’s permit: 15 years for the first stage of the learner’s permit

Non compliance penalties:

According to the law acts of New Mexico, failure of showing any proof of insurance or financial liability in any required case subjects the driver for several penalties, these penalties increase with the reoccurrence of the same situation:

First level of penalty is the monetary fine up to $ 300 and may be accompanies with driver license suspension for 6 months. The monetary fine could be increased in the following times up to $ 1000 and the license registration up to 3 years

If you fail to show the proof of insurance at the time of vehicle license renewal, the vehicle registration will be suspended until you provide the DMV office with the required insurance documents.

SR – 22

Although New Mexico is one of the states that do not require SR – 22 as a proof of completion of insurance documents, you are still required to complete all the insurance regulations and provide a copy of the insurance policy to the court. In the mean time the insurance agent should also provide all the required information about your insurance policy to the New Mexico insurance database. DWI

On of the highest concerns in the state of New Mexico, those drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol. If you are 21 years or older then, the maximum limit for blood or breath test is 0.8 and this result is reduced to 0.4 if you are driving a commercial vehicle. If you are still in the instructional driving license state then your maximum allowed alcohol level is 0.2.

The state of New Mexico is very strict about alcohol levels in blood and breath tests and if you have been found to drive in such condition then the court may fine you stiff fines or revoke your driving license for a designated period.

The court may also require installation of ignition interlock for any commercial vehicle driver who had been driving under the influence of alcohol. The ignition interlock will prevent the driver from driving his vehicle if the alcohol level is above the permitted level.
